When not to go, and what you lose if you do
There is no month when every part of Son La is at its worst, but there are clear periods to avoid for each place and each kind of traveller. This page lists them, with the reasons and what you can do instead.
The short version

The rainy season, May to September
Rain is the main reason to postpone. In Moc Chau the rainy season runs from about May to August, with rain easing in September; on the Ta Xua trek routes, June to September is described as slippery and landslide-prone. The UK Foreign Office warns that landslides can block roads in mountainous areas during the rainy season.
The 2024 Ta Xua landslide happened on 10 August, in the middle of this period, and led the province to advise limiting visits during rain and floods. If your dates fall in these months, choose places on the main highway, keep plans short and keep a spare day.
What you gain: green hills, full waterfalls, fruit, cooler air than Hanoi and fewer visitors outside weekends.

Holidays and weekends
Domestic tourism drives Son La. Over the holidays at the end of April and on 1 May 2026, the province recorded more than 312,000 visits, 41% more than the year before, with Moc Chau and Ta Xua among the busiest places. Ta Xua can host about 700 to 800 visitors at a time, and its rooms sell out at holidays and Tet.
The same applies to the Lunar New Year, to the 2 September week in Moc Chau, and to Saturdays in the blossom and mustard seasons. If you are an international visitor with flexible dates, a weekday trip is the single most useful change you can make.

Fog and cold
Winter, from December to February, is cold and often misty. Moc Chau mornings can fall to 5°C or below and near 0°C in the coldest weeks; nights on Ta Xua are colder. For travellers who want clear views and warm days, this is a poor time; for those who want cloud seas, mustard fields and blossom, it is the season.
Fog causes more practical trouble than cold: it slows driving at dawn and hides the plum valleys until mid morning. Avoid early-morning driving on unfamiliar mountain roads, and plan valley visits from about 9 am.

When the timing is right for each place
- Moc Chau: late October to February for flowers, March to May for mild weather, weekdays throughout.
- Ta Xua: October to April, after a cold, clear night.
- Quynh Nhai lake: September to April.
- Son La town: most of the year; the museum is indoors.

Common questions
Questions readers ask
Is July a bad month for Son La?
It is the heart of the rainy season, so it is a poor month for Ta Xua and long road trips. Moc Chau is green and cooler than Hanoi, and works for a short stay.
Should I avoid Tet?
If you dislike crowds, yes. Tet coincides with plum blossom in Moc Chau and brings the busiest days of the year.
Is winter too cold?
Mornings are cold, close to freezing in the coldest weeks, but days are often clear. Bring warm layers.
When is the quietest time?
Weekdays outside holidays, especially in March, April, October and November.
