Son La town: a provincial capital with a hard history

Son La town is the provincial capital, a valley town on Highway 6 about 310 km from Hanoi. Most visitors stop here on the way to Dien Bien Phu. The reason to stop is the old French prison on Khau Ca hill, now a museum, with hot springs and Thai villages in reach for a second day.

What the town is like

Son La town is an administrative and market centre rather than a sight in itself. Since 1 July 2025 it is no longer a city with its own wards and communes; its area is split into four wards of the province, To Hieu, Chieng An, Chieng Coi and Chieng Sinh. The main street is named after To Hieu, a revolutionary who died after being held in the town’s prison.

The town lies in a valley surrounded by Thai villages and farmland. It has the widest choice of hotels in the province outside Moc Chau, which makes it a practical base for Quynh Nhai lake and a natural overnight stop between Moc Chau and Dien Bien Phu. Evenings are quiet; the promenade near the museum is where people walk after dark.

The old prison museum

The French colonial authorities built the prison on Khau Ca hill in 1908, on about 500 m², to hold Vietnamese patriots and revolutionaries. The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism says it was enlarged in 1940 to about 1,700 m² behind stone and brick walls about 4 m high; Viet Nam News gives about 2,170 m² after three expansions. Between 1930 and 1945 it held 1,007 prisoners, including several who later led the country.

To Hieu led the prison’s Party committee from May 1940 to October 1941 and planted a peach tree on the cliff, which still flowers in spring and is one of the things Vietnamese visitors come to see. French troops bombed the prison before withdrawing in 1952 and American bombing in 1965 left it almost destroyed; parts have been rebuilt. The site was listed as a national relic in 1962 and is now described as a national special historic site. A restoration project covering the prison, a nearby cemetery and two neighbouring relics was approved in 2019.

Inside you see rebuilt cells, basement solitary-confinement rooms, shackles and other artefacts, and an adjacent museum on the province’s ethnic cultures with archaeological finds including bronze drums. Much of the labelling is in Vietnamese, and the tone is commemorative. Allow one to two hours.

Hot springs, food and villages nearby

Ban Mong hot spring, about 5 km from the centre, was reported in 2024 to open from 08:00 to 18:00 daily, with herbal or mineral bathing at about 120,000 VND per person and water at about 36 to 38°C. The local table is Thai: pa pỉnh tộp, a carp split and stuffed with herbs and grilled over charcoal; smoked buffalo; duck from Chieng Mai; buffalo-skin salad; and a porridge flavoured with the bitter-spicy mac nhung fruit.

Thai villages lie in the valleys around the town and along the roads to Quynh Nhai and Thuan Chau. Visiting them works well with someone who knows a family, or through a homestay; see the villages and etiquette page. Pha Din pass, on the road towards Dien Bien, has a viewpoint at 1,648 m and a small tourism area.

How many nights, getting there and costs

One night is enough for the museum and an evening in town; two allow a day at Quynh Nhai lake or the hot spring. From Hanoi, VnExpress gives about 310 km and about six and a half hours by Highway 6, by Highway 37, or by the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway and Highway 37. Buses leave from My Dinh or Yen Nghia; the reported fare range in 2024 was 150,000 to 350,000 VND. Son La has no airport with scheduled flights; Dien Bien airport is about 170 km away.

Who should skip Son La town, and when

  • Travellers looking for scenery rather than history. Moc Chau, Ta Xua and Quynh Nhai have the landscapes.
  • Anyone with a weekend only. At about 6.5 hours each way it is too far from Hanoi for two days.
  • Visitors who find memorial sites about imprisonment and torture distressing; the basement cells are grim.
  • Travellers unwilling to drive mountain roads in the rainy season, when Highway 6 and the passes can be slowed by landslides.
