Fares and timetables change and differ between operators. Buy from the bus station counter or a booking platform, confirm where the bus drops you, and for Moc Chau ask whether it stops in the ward you are staying in or only on the highway. The UK Foreign Office notes that bus and coach crashes are more likely at night; a daytime bus is the more cautious choice.

By car with a driver

Hiring a car and driver is the most flexible way to link places, especially Ta Xua, which has no through bus to the commune. It also lets you stop at viewpoints and travel in daylight. Ask for the vehicle size, whether the driver knows the final climb to Ta Xua, and what happens if a road is closed by a landslide.

Self-driving a car requires a 1968-convention International Driving Permit together with your national licence, according to the UK Foreign Office, and third-party insurance is compulsory. Road rules are poorly observed; the Foreign Office advises keeping speed down and staying alert.

By motorbike

Riding is popular with Vietnamese visitors, and the roads to Moc Chau and Ta Xua appear in many trip reports. For foreign visitors the UK Foreign Office is blunt: travelling by motorbike in Vietnam is much riskier than at home, you should not hire one unless you are an experienced rider, you need the 1968 International Driving Permit and your licence, helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger, and you should not hand over your passport as a deposit.

Check that your travel insurance covers motorbike riding with the licence you hold; many policies do not. On the final climb to Ta Xua, VnExpress suggests that riders who are not confident use a local motorbike taxi instead, with the price agreed first.

The routes in detail

Hanoi to Moc Chau and Son La town

Highway 6 leaves Hanoi to the west, crosses the former Hoa Binh province, now part of Phu Tho, climbs to the Moc Chau plateau and continues to Son La town and Dien Bien. Alternatives to Son La town use Highway 37, or the Noi Bai – Lao Cai expressway (CT05) and then Highway 37.

Hanoi to Ta Xua

Head to Son Tay, cross the Red River at Trung Ha bridge, follow Highway 32 to the Thu Cuc junction, and turn onto Highway 37 through Phu Yen to the old Bac Yen town. The last section from Bac Yen up to Ta Xua is steep and winding; older reports described about 15 km of rough road, while VnExpress now reports a concrete main road.

To Quynh Nhai lake

From Son La town, a travel blog describes the route via Highway 6T (provincial road 107), with passes, and a public bus line 03. From Dien Bien province, Highway 279 from Tuan Giao reaches the lake in about 40 km.

The expressway under construction

An expressway from Hoa Binh to Moc Chau is being built. Its Son La section is about 32 km, from Van Ho to the Highway 43 junction in Van Son ward. In February 2026 VnEconomy reported a two-lane first phase, construction begun in May 2025 and completion in 2028, with a proposal to widen it to four lanes. In June 2026 another report said land clearance was over 93% complete and the contractors were aiming to finish before 31 December 2027.

Until it opens, travel times stay as above. Road works along the corridor can mean delays and heavy trucks on the old highway; build in time.

Flying in, and entry

Son La has no airport with scheduled flights. International visitors fly into Hanoi Noi Bai; from there, Vietnam Airlines gives four to five hours to Son La by car or bus. Dien Bien airport is about 170 km from Son La town, around three hours by road, which helps if you are doing a one-way trip and flying back from Dien Bien.

Check your entry rules before you plan dates. The UK Foreign Office says British nationals can stay up to 45 days without a visa, and that the e-visa allows up to 90 days but ties you to the entry and exit points you choose. Other nationalities have different rules.
