Moc Chau: a farming plateau that became a weekend escape

Moc Chau is a high plateau of tea plantations, plum orchards and dairy pasture about 200 km west of Hanoi. It is the part of Son La most visitors see, and the only part that works on a two-day trip. Its appeal depends heavily on the month and on whether you come midweek or at a weekend.

What Moc Chau is like

Moc Chau is farmland first. The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism describes a plateau at over 1,050 m with a cool, temperate climate, covered in tea plantations known for oolong, with plum valleys at Na Ka and Mu Nau, and a dairy industry. Voice of Vietnam mentions a meadow of about 1,600 hectares. Typical temperatures quoted by these sources sit between about 15 and 22°C, which is why Hanoi residents come up in summer.

Since 2025 the old town centre is split between four wards, Moc Chau, Moc Son, Thao Nguyen and Van Son, with farming communes around them. Highway 6 runs through the middle, lined with shops selling dairy products, dried plums and fruit wine. The town itself is a working highway town, not a pretty one; the landscape is in the side valleys and on the farm roads off the highway.

The plateau has become a weekend destination for Hanoi and its tourism has grown accordingly: glass-floored bridges, cafés built for photographs, flower gardens that charge for entry, and large weekend crowds. A Bach Long glass bridge of 632 m above a drop of about 150 m is one of the newer attractions. None of that is a reason to stay away, but it is a reason to choose your day and your valley.

How many nights

One night is the minimum that makes sense from Hanoi. The bus takes three to five hours each way, so a day trip leaves you a few hours on the plateau in the middle of the day, which is when the light is flattest and the valleys busiest. With one night you can be in a plum valley or a tea hill in the early morning, after the fog lifts and before the day visitors arrive.

Two nights let you add a slower day: a waterfall such as Dai Yem, a walk through Ang pine forest, or a ride out to a Hmong hamlet like Pa Phach. More than two nights is usually only worth it if you are continuing west to Son La town or using Moc Chau as a cool base in summer. These are our planning estimates, not rules.

Getting there

Buses leave Hanoi from My Dinh and Yen Nghia bus stations, with more departures from My Dinh; many run at night, and some operators run daytime services as well. Reported fares between 2019 and 2023 ranged from about 130,000 to 220,000 VND for a seat or berth, with limousine vans from about 220,000 VND. Return buses from Moc Chau to Hanoi were reported between about 05:00 and 22:00.

By car or motorbike the route is Highway 6 all the way. A new expressway from Hoa Binh to Moc Chau is under construction; its Son La section of about 32 km, from Van Ho to the Highway 43 junction in Van Son ward, was expected to be finished between late 2027 and 2028 according to reports in 2026. Until then, expect the old highway and its mountain passes. Full detail is on the getting there page.

Who should skip Moc Chau, and when

  • Travellers who can only come on a Saturday in blossom season or during Tet. The valleys and roads are at their most crowded then.
  • Anyone expecting wilderness. Moc Chau is a farming and weekend-tourism area with a busy highway through it.
  • Visitors in July hoping for wide views. Low cloud and rain often hide the hills, and farm tracks turn to mud.
  • People who dislike cold. December and January mornings can be close to freezing, and many rooms are not heated.

Common questions

Questions readers ask

Is Moc Chau doable as a day trip from Hanoi?

It is possible but poor value. With three to five hours each way by bus, you arrive in the flattest light and leave before the evening. One night is the practical minimum.

When exactly do the plum trees flower?

The main flowering is usually from late January into February, and lasts two to three weeks. Some years and some valleys flower earlier. Check recent photographs before you go.

Do I have to pay to enter the flower gardens?

Many gardens are private and have charged a small fee, reported at about 20,000 VND per person in 2021. Some hamlets have been free. Ask before you walk in.

What should I wear in winter?

Warm layers, a hat and gloves for early mornings from December to February, when temperatures can drop to around 5°C or lower.
