Moc Chau, month by month
Moc Chau changes completely through the year: white plum blossom in late winter, green tea hills and fruit in the rains, white mustard fields in early winter. This calendar shows what to expect each month and how far the dates move, with a row for Ta Xua and the lake for comparison.
The calendar
Our reading of the cited sources: filled = main season or comfortable conditions, half = possible or workable, empty = off season, or rain and low cloud likely.
The chart summarises the sources below. Flowering depends on the weather of each year, so read it as a guide to odds, not a timetable. Weekends and national holidays matter as much as the month; see the festivals page for the dates that fill the plateau.

Plum, apricot and peach blossom: late December to February
The plum is the emblem of Moc Chau. Vietnam Pictorial puts the peak from late January to early February by the lunar calendar; VnExpress says the plum and apricot flower from the second half of January and last two to three weeks, earlier or later depending on the weather. VietNamNet reported trees flowering in late November and early December in 2021, which shows how much the timing can move.
The valleys named most often are Na Ka, with about 100 hectares of plum, Mu Nau, about 4 km from the centre and reached only by motorbike or bicycle, Pa Phach, a Hmong hamlet about 5 km from the Highway 6 junction, and the villages of Long Luong, Thong Cuong, Tan Lap and Ban Ang. Pa Phach was in the former Dong Sang ward, which merged into Moc Son ward in 2025.
Two details catch people out. Fog often covers the valleys in the early morning in this season, so VietNamNet advises going from about 9 am. And many gardens are private and charge a small fee, reported at about 20,000 VND per person in 2021. Peach blossom appears in the same period in some villages.

March to May: green hills and the plum harvest
After the blossom, the plateau turns green. March and April are dry and mild, with good visibility, though waterfalls are low until the rains. Reports from the national holidays at the end of April 2026 linked the crowds in Moc Chau to the plum harvest and mild, sunny weather; other sources give the plum and peach fruit season as June to September. The ban flower, a white bauhinia, flowers across the north-west in March and April, according to Vietnam Airlines’ travel guide.

June to September: tea, fruit and rain
This is the rainy season, from about May to August with rain tapering in September. It is also when the tea hills are at their greenest, fruit is harvested and the waterfalls, including Dai Yem, are full. The plateau stays cooler than Hanoi, which is why summer visitors from the city come up for the weekend.
The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism presents Moc Chau as a summer escape, with ripe plums picked from the trees and premium oolong from its tea plantations. The downsides are low cloud, sudden downpours and muddy farm tracks. Plan indoor or short outings, and do not set out on mountain roads in heavy rain.

Late October to December: white mustard and clear cold
The white mustard flowers, grown as a winter crop and planted in fields and between orchards, are the second flower season. Phap Luat TP.HCM gives the peak as late October to the end of December; VnExpress said late November in 2013. Places named include Ban Lun, the Moc Chau Farm area, Na Ka valley, Ang pine forest and Pa Phach. Wild sunflowers flower around October, before the mustard.
Skies are often clear and the air is dry, but it is cold. The travel guide we cite reports early mornings in December at 5°C or lower and temperatures close to 0°C in the coldest months. Many rooms have no heating. Pack as you would for an autumn hill walk in Europe.

Tea and dairy, year round
Tea and dairy are the plateau’s economy rather than seasonal sights. Tea hills, including the much-photographed heart-shaped hill on the road towards Ngu Dong and Ban On, look their greenest in the rainy months but can be seen all year. Dairy products are sold along Highway 6 throughout the year. Whether a farm visit is possible depends on the farm; ask locally rather than turning up at a working dairy.

How to use the calendar
- For blossom: aim for late January to mid February and keep the dates flexible by a week. Avoid Tet itself if you dislike crowds.
- For mustard: mid November to mid December gives the widest window.
- For comfortable walking: March, April, October and November.
- For green landscapes and cool air: June to August, accepting rain.
- To combine with Ta Xua clouds: November to March overlaps both.
