Festivals, and the dates that fill the hills
Son La’s festival calendar is set by the farming year, the Lunar New Year and, unusually, Vietnam’s National Day on 2 September, which the Hmong of Moc Chau celebrate as a new year of its own. Festivals bring colour and crowds. This page gives what we could confirm and what it means for rooms and roads.
The festival year
| When | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| About a month before Lunar New Year | Hmong traditional new year | Hmong villages, including around Moc Chau and Ta Xua |
| Lunar New Year (Tet), late January or February | Tet; plum blossom season | Everywhere; very busy in Moc Chau |
| After Tet | Boat racing on the Da River | Pa Uon bridge, Quynh Nhai |
| Late April – 1 May | National holidays | Heavy domestic travel; Moc Chau and Ta Xua busy |
| Late August – early September | Moc Chau Culture and Tourism Week; Independence Tet | Moc Chau and Moc Son wards |
| Lunar November | Month-long traditional festivities of ethnic groups | Moc Chau area |
Lunar dates move against the western calendar each year. Check the Lunar New Year date for your year of travel before fixing anything around it.

Moc Chau Culture and Tourism Week, around 2 September
Every year around the National Day holiday the Moc Chau National Tourism Area holds a culture and tourism week. In 2026 it ran from 27 August to 5 September, with the main events on the 8/5 square in Moc Chau ward: a Son La brocade night on 31 August, an art programme followed by fireworks on the night of 1 September, 14 culture and food camps, street performances by Hmong, Dao, Thai and Muong groups, a mass performance of pao throwing and pounding of sticky-rice cakes.
The 2025 edition opened on 1 September in Moc Chau ward, marking the 80th National Day, with performances along Highway 6 and in Moc Son ward, and demonstrations of brocade weaving, embroidery, Hmong beeswax batik, Thai xoe dancing and the bamboo dance.
This is the most colourful week of the year on the plateau and also one of the busiest. Rooms book out, Highway 6 is congested on the way up, and prices rise. Book well ahead or stay outside the centre.

Independence Tet and the Hmong new year
The Hmong of Moc Chau keep two new years. Their traditional new year falls about a month before the Lunar New Year. The second, on 2 September, began after the 1945 declaration of independence, when the community created a holiday to mark National Day, according to elders quoted by VnExpress in 2014. It is celebrated with tug-of-war, stick pushing, crossbow shooting, spinning tops, ball tossing, folk song and dance, cake pounding and the trading of Hmong skirts, and at night young people meet at what is described as a market of love.
For visitors, the 2 September celebrations are easy to see in Moc Chau because they coincide with the culture week. The traditional new year is more of a family and village affair; if you are invited, it is a privilege, and the etiquette on the villages page applies.

Boat racing and other festivals on the lake
After Tet, Quynh Nhai holds boat races on the Da River at the Pa Uon bridge. In 2023 the races were part of a culture, sports and tourism week from 28 January to 1 February, with 16 teams and about 450 athletes, including teams from neighbouring provinces, racing over 1,500 m in men’s, women’s and mixed events.
The Thai communities around the lake also keep the Kin Pang Then festival and a hair-washing festival revived in Phieng Lanh, and on the 30th day of Tet resettled families paddle out to a memorial island honouring those who gave up their land to the reservoir. These are community events first; watch respectfully, and ask before photographing rituals.

Tet and the national holidays
Lunar New Year coincides with the plum blossom in Moc Chau, so the plateau is at its busiest. Many businesses close for some days; transport fills before and after. At Ta Xua, VnExpress warns that rooms sell out at public holidays and Tet.
The holidays at the end of April and on 1 May are just as busy. Over those holidays in 2026, Son La recorded more than 312,000 visits, 41% more than a year earlier, of which 727 were by international visitors; Moc Chau, Ta Xua, Ngoc Chien, Muong La and Pha Din were the busiest areas. Expect full buses, higher room prices and traffic on Highway 6.

Planning around festivals
- To see a festival: the Moc Chau culture week around 2 September is the easiest to attend and the most widely reported. Book rooms early.
- To avoid crowds: stay away from Tet, the end of April to 1 May, and the 2 September week, and avoid Saturdays in blossom season.
- For village festivals: go with someone local who knows the community and the date, which can change.
- For the boat races: follow Quynh Nhai news in the weeks after Tet; dates are announced locally.
