Is Son La worth a trip from Hanoi if I only have two days?

Yes, if you limit it to Moc Chau, which is about 200 km from Hanoi. Son La town, Ta Xua and Quynh Nhai are too far for a two-day return trip without spending most of it on the road.

Did Son La merge with another province in 2025?

No. Son La remained a separate province. Its districts were abolished from 1 July 2025 and it now has 75 communes and wards.

Is this an official tourism website?

No. It is an independent guide. It links to official sources so that you can check each point yourself.

Can you book a homestay or a tour for me?

No. The guide does not sell anything or take bookings.

Places

Can I see Moc Chau and Ta Xua on one trip?

Yes, but they are on different roads from Hanoi. Allow at least three nights, and expect one long driving day between them.

Which place is closest to Hanoi?

Moc Chau, at about 200 km by Highway 6. Reported bus times are three to five hours.

Is Quynh Nhai worth the extra time?

If you are already in Son La town or travelling on to Lai Chau or Dien Bien, it adds a lake landscape that the rest of the province does not have. As a separate trip from Hanoi it is a long way for one day on the water.

Do these pages recommend hotels?

No. They give reported price ranges for rooms so that you can budget, without naming or rating businesses.

Moc Chau

Is Moc Chau doable as a day trip from Hanoi?

It is possible but poor value. With three to five hours each way by bus, you arrive in the flattest light and leave before the evening. One night is the practical minimum.

When exactly do the plum trees flower?

The main flowering is usually from late January into February, and lasts two to three weeks. Some years and some valleys flower earlier. Check recent photographs before you go.

Do I have to pay to enter the flower gardens?

Many gardens are private and have charged a small fee, reported at about 20,000 VND per person in 2021. Some hamlets have been free. Ask before you walk in.

What should I wear in winter?

Warm layers, a hat and gloves for early mornings from December to February, when temperatures can drop to around 5°C or lower.

Ta Xua

Is a cloud sea certain if I go in the cloud season?

No. It depends on the previous night’s weather. Cold nights after sunny days give the highest chance. Two nights improve your odds.

Can a normal car reach Ta Xua?

VnExpress reports that the main road to the commune centre is concrete and that 16-seat vehicles reach it. Side roads to some viewpoints and homestays are steeper and narrower.

Do I need a guide for the dinosaur spine?

The short walk of about 1.5 km is done without a guide by many visitors in dry weather. The multi-day trek to the summit area is different: sources advise going with a guide and porter and not alone.

What happened with the 2024 landslide?

On 10 August 2024 a large landslide on Provincial Road 112 in Ta Xua killed one person, injured two and closed the road. The province advised limiting visits during the rain and flood season.

We could not find a reliable published price. Ask several boat owners, agree the route and the price per boat in advance, and confirm life jackets are on board.

Can I swim in the lake?

We found no official guidance on swimming. The lake is a working reservoir with boat traffic and fish farms, and water levels change with the dam. Ask locally and be cautious.

Is Pa Uon bridge worth a stop?

If you are on Highway 279, yes: the deck is 918 m long and the main pier 98.6 m tall, and the area is a popular place for sunset over the lake.

Most stay in Son La town, where the choice of rooms is wider, and visit the lake for the day. There are hotels and resorts near Pa Uon bridge.
