How many nights: time against distance
Son La’s sights are far apart and the good light comes early. The time you need is set less by how much there is to see than by how long the roads take. These are our planning estimates, based on the distances and times the sources report.
Nights by place
| Place | From Hanoi | Suggested nights | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moc Chau | About 200 km, 3–5 hours | 1–2 | Valleys and tea hills are at their quietest early in the morning |
| Ta Xua | About 230–240 km, 4–5 hours | 1–2 (a trek: 2) | The cloud view is at dawn and depends on the night before |
| Son La town | About 310 km, about 6.5 hours | 1 | The museum takes a morning; the town is a stop on the way west |
| Quynh Nhai lake | Beyond Son La town | 0–1 | A day from Son La town, or one night for evening light |
These are planning estimates. They assume daytime travel and do not include the extra day we suggest keeping in reserve in the rainy season.

Two nights: Moc Chau
A long weekend from Hanoi fits Moc Chau and nothing else. Leave Hanoi early on the first day, reach the plateau by lunchtime, and use the afternoon for a tea hill or a pine forest. On the second day, be in a plum valley or a mustard field after the fog lifts at about nine, then visit a waterfall or a Hmong hamlet. Return on the third morning, or the second evening if you have only one night.
Going midweek changes this trip more than anything else. Saturdays in the blossom season and the 2 September week are crowded; a Tuesday in December can be quiet.

Two nights: Ta Xua
Ta Xua is a separate trip. Travel up in daylight on the first day; VnExpress advises against arriving in the evening. The next morning is your first chance of a cloud sea, and the second morning is your backup. A three-day trek from the Tram Tau side is a different plan, with two nights on the mountain and a guide.

Four to six nights: the Highway 6 loop
- 01
Hanoi to Moc Chau
Morning bus or drive, about 200 km. Afternoon on the plateau. One or two nights.
- 02
Moc Chau to Son La town
About 110 km by our estimate along Highway 6. Prison museum in the afternoon or next morning.
- 03
Quynh Nhai lake
A day trip from Son La town, or a night near Pa Uon bridge.
- 04
Return or continue
Back to Hanoi in a long day, about 310 km; or continue to Dien Bien Phu and fly from Dien Bien.
Five nights is comfortable: two in Moc Chau, two in Son La town with a lake day, and one spare. Four nights works if you accept a long last day. Continuing one way to Dien Bien saves the long drive back to Hanoi; Dien Bien airport is about 170 km from Son La town.

A week or more: Moc Chau, Ta Xua and the west
To see all four areas, add Ta Xua to the loop. Because it is on another road, the realistic order is either Ta Xua first from Hanoi, then across to Moc Chau, or the Highway 6 loop first and Ta Xua as a separate trip. Allow seven nights, including one long transfer day and one spare day. This is the plan where a car with a driver earns its cost, because buses do not link the places directly.
In the cloud season from November to March, this longer plan also lets you match the weather: if the forecast shows a cold, clear spell, move Ta Xua to those nights.

Why fewer nights usually fails
- A day trip to Moc Chau spends six to ten hours on the road for a few hours of midday light.
- One night at Ta Xua gives one dawn. If it is overcast, the trip has no view.
- Son La town and Quynh Nhai in one night from Hanoi means two long road days in a row.
- In the rainy season, a single closed road can wipe out a tight plan.
If you are short of time, cut places rather than nights. Moc Chau done properly is a better trip than four places seen from a bus window.
Common questions
Questions readers ask
Is one night enough for Moc Chau?
Yes for a first look, with an early start on the second morning. Two nights allow a slower day.
How many nights for Ta Xua?
At least one, ideally two, because the cloud view depends on the weather of the night before.
Can I see all of Son La in five days?
You can see Moc Chau, Son La town and Quynh Nhai in five days. Adding Ta Xua needs about a week.
Should I fly back from Dien Bien?
If you are continuing west past Son La town, it saves the long drive back to Hanoi. Check flight schedules before you plan around it.
